Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara models hairstylist Ward Stegerhoek’s simple, scorch-free (and definitely not your mother’s) hot roller styles.
Bouncy Waves
THE LOOK: When you’re going big, rollers are the only tool that will get you the bombshell trifecta: lift at the roots, volume at the sides and a soft swing.
- Apply styling cream to damp strands, blow-dry straight, then wrap 2-inch chunks around small hot rollers, adding more styling cream as you go.
- Secure rollers at different angles. “Mix them up so it doesn’t look so perfect,” says Stegerhoek.
- Once hair is thoroughly set, remove rollers and rake out curls.
- Rub in a drop of shine serum to finish.
Big Updo
THE LOOK: Volume and texture are the keys to a flattering updo—and hot rollers make them a cinch to achieve.
-
Spray a 2-inch section of dry hair with volumizer. Alternating medium and large rollers, wrap hair horizontally from tips up to roots. “Start at the crown and stagger sections in a brick pattern along the back of your head,” says Stegerhoek.
-
Once curls cool, remove rollers and tease roots with a finetooth comb.
-
Gather hair at the center of your head, twist up and insert large bobby pins all over to secure.
-
Tie a simple ribbon from the nape to crown.
Sleek Waves
THE LOOK: Whereas curling irons can have a wide margin of error—leaving you with awkward crimps or droopy waves—”Hot rollers guarantee smooth, refined curls,” says Stegerhoek.
- Starting with a deep side part, wrap 3-inch sections of hair under large hot rollers from tips to midshaft.
- After curls set, remove the rollers and brush the front section to the side with a paddle brush. “Spritz the brush with a mist of hairspray beforehand for hold and shine,” says Stegerhoek.
- Gently loosen curls, by brushing through the bottom of the hair.
